Augusta Chiropractic Nutrition: Gut, Bone, Chondroitin Sulfate

July 07, 2021

The gut and osteoporosis. They may not seem be connected conditions beyond the fact that they both take place in the body. Osteoporosis’ effect is often seen in deteriorated bone. Gut issues’ effect is often seen in digestive problems. Researchers today are discovering ties between gut health and osteoporosis’ effect on bone health. Lombardy Chiropractic Clinic helps Augusta chiropractic patients experiencing both issues!

OSTEOPOROSIS AND THE GUT HEALTH CONNECTION

Augusta osteoporosis is quite prevalent. Gut issues are, too. Gut health modification with probiotic use has grown to be more mainstream recently to help chronic diseases like autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases as well as cancer and diabetes. Now, researchers are looking at the health of the gut microbiome to address bone mass regulation which affects osteoporosis and osteopenia. (1) Senile osteoporosis is linked to a reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and altered microbiota. How these are associated in postmenopausal osteoporosis is not yet known. A study that tried to sort this out did find that there was reduced bacterial richness and diversity in postmenopausal osteoporosis with significant difference in levels of phyla and genera in gut microbiota. (2) Lombardy Chiropractic Clinic sees these new discoveries connecting gut health and osteoporosis as being useful in planning the Augusta osteoporosis treatment plan.

DIETARY HELP FOR OSTEOPOROSIS

Augusta chiropractic care of osteoporosis is multifaceted incorporating spinal manipulation via the gentle Cox® Technic protocols, exercise, and nutrition. Framing osteoporosis as a condition likely encompassing the microbiota of the gut, researchers are now using dietary approaches to address osteoporosis. Nutritionally, a chondroitin sulfate/calcium complex improved the BMD and microstructure of the osteoporotic femur bone in a rat study. It also changed levels of the serum bone markers. This supplement intervention of chondroitin and calcium has the potential to ease osteoporosis and related symptoms. (3) Lombardy Chiropractic Clinic is well versed in the effects of chondroitin sulfate for disc health and is excited that it may also be beneficial for osteoporosis.
