Augusta Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

January 08, 2019

What do stiff, noisy, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Augusta knee pain sufferers know that morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with getting up and moving. Lombardy Chiropractic Clinic hears our Augusta chiropractic patients bemoan this all the time. Those Augusta knee pain sufferers would be pleased to get some relief. What is one way to get some relief? The Mediterranean diet that involves, of all things, eating. Lombardy Chiropractic Clinic wonders “How bad can eating be for Augusta knee pain relief?”

Augusta OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

Augusta knee osteoarthritis is ordinary. There are numerous Augusta knee pain sufferers. They’re not alone! 240 million people around the globe live with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Augusta knee osteoarthritis sufferer recognizes the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that reduces the enjoyment of daily life. (1) It is just not very fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet includes eating lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet allows for moderate consumption of dairy, poultry and eggs in addition to red wine and olive oil as the key source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Eating a Mediterranean diet can be very delicious and adventurous for a recent Mediterranean diet enthusiast.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation in addition to pain. A review of three research reports highlights that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation because of osteoarthritis decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Particularly, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who better followed a Mediterranean diet have lowered risk of deteriorating knee pain at four years follow up. For those who did not have knee osteoarthritis at the beginning of the 4 years project and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% reduced risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was found. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and less pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
