Could a Plant Compound Help Protect Your Spine Discs?

July 29, 2026

If you've ever dealt with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs are important to your daily comfort and mobility. Now, noteworthy new research is investigating a natural compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to delay disc degeneration at the cellular level.

WHAT IS QUERCETIN?

Quercetin is a botanical compound known as a flavonoid. It's already known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics, but two studies published in 2026 dug deeper into how it may particularly support the health of your spinal discs.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND

The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin safeguards nucleus pulposus cells — the soft, gel-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers discovered that quercetin works by calming down a specific inflammatory pathway and strengthening a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this supports disc cells in removing worn-out components and functioning more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration process.

The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a distinct view. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers identified that fibrosis — a kind of scarring — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a key role in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin shows promise as an anti-scarring agent, meaning it may help stop this scarring process from worsening.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS

While additional research is needed before quercetin becomes a standard part of disc care, these findings contribute to a increasing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a beneficial role alongside conservative, non-surgical back care like chiropractic treatment. At Lombardy Chiropractic Clinic, we believe in a whole-person approach to spinal health — combining hands-on chiropractic care with lifestyle factors that support your body's own healing.
