Augusta CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on both sides of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and typically thought of as a back muscle as it extends from the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae to the 12th rib. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum causes lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or elevation of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being studied about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s dual layers of muscle in order for it to best add to the motor control of the lumbar pain and prevent back pain. (6) Lombardy Chiropractic Clinic and you can talk about how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Augusta chiropractic visit to Lombardy Chiropractic Clinic.
